Never leave food that is cooking unattended.
If you need to leave for any reason, turn the stove off until you return.
Make sure to keep your kitchen and work space clean.
Many accidental fires start every year from the accumulation of grease and spilled food on the stove surface. Also, take care to not leave hand towels or pot holders on the stove.
Keep a multipurpose fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
If you do not know how to use one, stop by the firehouse between 9 AM and 4 PM Mon-Sat and we will be happy to give you a quick class.
NEVER, EVER pour water on a grease fire.
The most common causes for kitchen fires are grease or oil that ignites. If this should happen, smother the pan with a lid and turn off the heat or extinguish the fire with a multipurpose fire extinguisher and turn off the heat.
Keep children out of the cooking area while surfaces are hot.
If you wish to cook with your child, make sure they know the rules of the kitchen, no touching the stove, no horseplay, and no sharp objects.
Keep pot handles turned in towards the center of the stove.
This may help prevent accidentally knocking the pot over and spilling substances that could burn you or your children.
When finished preparing your meal, make sure the burners, stove, and all appliances are turned off.
Leaving something on is very dangerous for you and your family. For added security, unplug appliances such as your toaster and coffee maker, when not in use.
